NOVA Post-Mortem Examination Training Guide
Internal Examination-
Make sure the subject is placed correctly onto the surgery table and make sure you have all the designated surgical equipment below and your voice recorder. As you perform any action or deem an organ as “clean” state so or remark it aloud so the voice recorder can pick it up.
Scalpel
Bone-saw
Forceps
Scissors
Enterotome
skull chisel
Clamps
Rib cutters
Vibrating saw
Take your scalpel and make an incision directly under the laryngeal prominence or the adams apple all the way down to the belly button.
Separate the two skin flaps (Use clamps if needed) to their corresponding sides and you should now be looking directly in the thoracic or chest cavity.
Begin to examine all of the organs in the thoracic cavity, the order in which you do doesn’t matter as long as you examine all of the organs.
As you look through the organs and deem them “clean” or infected, place it onto the table or your medical cart.
If anything looks odd or or if you can tell the presence of a disease or ailment to one of the organs, make note of it using the voice recorder then proceed to place the organ aside for further examination.
Brain Examination
Use your scalpel to make an make a cut across the crown of the head, and one from the bony bump behind one ear to the bump behind the other.
Once completed, grab your vibrating saw and slowly push it into into the skull until you hear a change in the grinding noise and the saw should give way. (This means you have passed the skull structure.) Repeat this process in little parts to remove the skull correctly.
Once completed remove the skull and you should now be looking at the brain. Take your scalpel and remove a small piece of brain from the Frontal and temporal lobes. Place these samples aside as you will test them later.
Clean up-
Always after an autopsy, you will be required to stitch up the areas into which you cut. Returning the organs back inside of the body is completely optional. If you don’t require it for testing or (depending on the organ) are going to harvest the organ for future use, it is best to put it back inside its cavity. Wipe down the body for any blood that might of gotten out of the body and return the body back to the cryogenic freezer or dispose of it using the acid pit.
